Rock Solid Music, located at 420 Cambridge Street in Midland offers a wide variety of musical instruments, accessories and equipment.

Midland's own music store, Rock Solid Music is under new ownership.

Jeff and Kristine Schock of Midland purchased the business earlier this year. The store opened on Cambridge Street in Midland in 2021 and was previously owned by Tim Ortiz. The Schocks purchased the business from Ortiz in February.

“For years, Mid Michigan Music was my place to go,” Schock said. “I loved going there. It’s where I hung out, tried all the musical instruments, bought all my musical equipment from. When I found out they closed I was very, very sad.”

Schock is a lifelong musician who will graduate from The Los Angeles Film School as an audio engineer in December. He is involved with multiple local bands and has experience in business ownership.

He previously owned and operated a painting company and a deli business in Midland.

"I found Tim (and Rock Solid) a couple of years ago. Tim's health was slowly getting worse, so I just started helping out by working a couple of days a week."

The Schocks are working to bring in new equipment dealers to sell at the store and develop a business website. Since purchasing the business, Jeff wants to maintain the store's laid-back environment for people to play, visit and hang out.

"We want to get everything here that our players want," Schock said. "The difference between us and one of the (corporate stores) is that we treat everyone - musicians or not - like family."

In addition to selling guitars, basses, banjos, drums, wind instruments and more, Rock Solid will purchase pre-owned instruments and equipment, honor trades and make repairs. The Schocks are able to assist customers interested in a specific instrument, accessory or piece of equipment by ordering them directly to the store.
