Hidden away in a city park and encompassing just 12 acres, Hattiesburg Zoo is one of the state’s best kept secrets. Much more than a zoo, the Hattiesburg landmark features a ton of hands on activities as well as an adventure-packed ropes course. A perfect destination for people of all ages, the zoo should definitely be on your bucket list. Take a look:

The 12-acre zoo can be found in Kamper Park and was first opened in 1950.

Despite its smaller size, it's home to more than 80 species of animals from around the world.

The zoo is divided into different sections, which makes navigating it a breeze.

You'll start in the Africa Section, where you'll find antelope, monkeys, ostriches, servals, and zebras.

Next up is the South American Exhibit, which includes capybaras, iguanas, jaguars, macaws, howler monkeys, llamas, tapirs, and tigers.

Check out the Tiger Boardwalk, and you'll get a close view of American alligators.

You'll definitely want to devote some time to the Asbury Discovery Center.

A "room of wonders and oddities," the center will intrigue people of all ages.

The zoo also offers plenty of hands on activities, including a mining exhibit.

Visit during the summer months, and the younger ones can cool off on the splash pad.

There's even a train that circles the grounds, which is a great way to ensure you don't miss a thing.

The most recent addition to the zoo is the High Ropes Adventure Course.

The four-story rope course is the only one of its kind in Hattiesburg.

The adventure-packed course is open Friday through Sunday, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Perfect for people of all ages, the course includes two trails.

The Sky Trail, which is designed for adults and children over 4' tall, is $13 per person.

The Sky Tykes Trail, which is designed for children under 4', is $6 per person.

With the purchase of a ticket, you'll be allowed to spend 30 minutes navigating the course.

Both fun and challenging, the experience is bound to be a memorable one....

...no matter your age.

The Hattiesburg Zoo is located at 107 S. 17th Avenue in Hattiesburg. For more information, visit the Hattiesburg Zoo website or Facebook page. Details on the ropes course can be found on the High Ropes Adventure Course Facebook page as well as the zoo’s website.
