All aboard for new playground structure at Cameron park

Patrons of Phillips Memorial Park in Cameron are excited about the current

Patrons of Phillips Memorial Park in Cameron are excited about the current project in the fundraising stages for a train-themed commercial playground structure.

In keeping with the historic character of Cameron when prospering with dewberry and turpentine industries shipped by rail, a train design is being created to replace the earlier wooden structure in the continued memory of Dot Womble, wife of former mayor Mack Womble.

Because of the demand for dewberries to be shipped up North in the late 1800 and early 1900s, the play structure will be fittingly named "The Dewberry Express."

The former wooden train playground served many years of use and is dearly missed by children who visit the park. After months of preparation with Barrs Recreation in Pittsboro, the final design has been edited and completed.

Opportunities for patrons of Phillips Memorial Park and/or individuals interested in a worthy tax-deductible cause can donate to the project if they are so inclined.

Currently, T-shirts, hats and historic prints of the main road of Cameron are available for purchase. The design on the shirts and hats was created by Lisa Paschal, a member of the Park Committee, which represents the heritage of the Town of Cameron with railroads and dewberries.

Items to purchase can be found on June 18 at James Creek Cider House at 172 US-1 in Cameron from 1-5 p.m. in addition to specialty fruit ciders, live music, local farmers market, and a food truck making it a fun afternoon that is always enjoyed at James Creek Cider House. Or contact Laura Younts at 910 263 9366 if you want to purchase any items.

If you are inclined, please donate to: Phillips Memorial Park Fund.
